Tapas restaurants are all about “family-style” dining. The idea is really diner-friendly, for those looking to try several different dishes, but not wanting to completely stuff themselves. It also really gives you an idea of the overall quality and depth of a restaurant as poorly executed dishes can’t be hidden on a menu. One of my favorites in San Francisco is Bocadillos.
Tucked away in the Financial District near the outskirts of North Beach, Bocadillos offers its own very unique take on tapas. The menu is filled with a wide range of items, from vegetable dishes, appetizers, salads and several different meats and seafood. It is really a nice mix that doesn’t focus on one type of ethnic food in particular. A good combination of a number of different cuisines wrapped up all in one.
There is a large communal table that smaller groups can sit at. I have also seen larger groups reserve this table. It makes for a great opportunity to order plenty of items off the menu and mix and match what you try. There is also seating around the bar and by the windows, a perfect opportunity to people watch while you’re eating. The decor is very understated, yet modern in appearance. It feels like a nice, comfortable neighborhood restaurant.
Patatas Bravas |
Much of the menu is based on typical tapas items, like ceviche, jamon serrano, patatas bravas and the like. But there are a number of other standouts that are actually non-traditional items like the brussel sprouts, several of the other vegetable dishes, and the wonderful bocadillos. Another great thing about tapas restaurants; there are going to be a few misses among your choices. But there are so many other dishes to try that it allows people with different likes and dislikes to each enjoy something they like. The tastes and flavors at Bocadillos are for the most part spot on, with a great mix from dish to dish.
One of the great things about the restaurant is that it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is sometimes difficult to find restaurants that have full service throughout the day, but Bocadillos provides that for its customers. My one complaint: service can be hit or miss at times and is not always the most attentive.
Bocadillos is a fun, lively restaurant that can fit the needs of most diners. It provides larger parties with the opportunity to try almost an entire menu and smaller parties to pick and choose what they are looking for. Very good food and a wonderful tapas restaurant in San Francisco.
